Admit it. High school is scary. We’ve all seen the movies. Everyone tells you about these terrifying late nights, the sadistic teachers, the horrible drama, the toxic plastics. We’ve practically heard it all. However, what’s the truth? What really happens in high school? We’re here to help you debunk these overrated, archaic, stereotypical myths of high school.

Myth 1: People stay the same.

Debunk: We have the greatest times with our childhood elementary friends. We’ve played hopscotch on the courts, jumped over the slide playing lava monster, and even sucked otter pops under the scorching sun. Get ready for some drastic changes. People won’t stay the same throughout high school. Some will becomes people you don’t recognize. However, you must remember that this is just part of the process of growing up. Don’t get discouraged if you drift from certain people because it's inevitable.

Myth 2: Junior Year is a piece of cake!

Debunk: BIGGEST. MYTH. EVER. Junior year is utter hell. I mean utter hell. I’m talking, you get an average of around three hours of sleep a night, you are drowned in work, and don’t have the time to have fun. In order to avoid this, it is absolutely vital to learn time management- to work smart, not hard. Doing so will make this entire year will make your life much easier.

Myth 3: Teenagers don’t develop mental illnesses in high school.

Debunk: I think we’ve established at this point that high school is hard. You study endlessly for tests, work your little butt off slaving for teachers. However, a lot of the time, bad grades and just the overwhelming stress can kind of mess with your head a little. You can get depressed or develop anxiety for these tests or important grades. After all, these tests and quizzes are what get you into a college, and that can place an enormous amount of pressure on students. Putting aside school, you have extra pressure from extracurriculars, home, and personal relationships. However, a good way to cope is by seeking help when needed, and surrounding yourself with motivated, and positive people.

Myth 4: You will find your path in high school.

Debunk: Not exactly. High school is a transitioning phase from the child to the adult. You might get a better understanding of what you want to do in your near future, but if you don’t initially succeed, it’s okay! (THAT’S WHAT FLAME IS HERE FOR!) Here at FLAME, we provide you with the people and resources that you need to make your journey to the real world as smooth as possible.
